Hide and seek
BG! &bull Jan 3, 2012
Being a child of the Sixties meant that I grew up with a minimum of technology. Radios were crackly things, TVs were monochrome affairs with valves, cars ran on 5-star 101-octane leaded petrol. Not much changed when the Seventies arrived - OK, so radios got transistors, TVs got colour and 5-star juice was banned, but we still had no computers, no internet, no GPS. Navigating in the hills was… Full Story »

More Far Eastern Fells Wildcamping
BG! &bull Oct 15, 2011
After the Friday drag up the M6 and the traditional fill-up at the Ings Little Chef we nabbed a roadside car-parking space at Church Bridge, Troutbeck. Having changed into our scruffs we hoisted our packs and set off past the church and along field-paths past High Green and Town Head, using Ing Lane to access the fells via Hagg Gill. We had intended to nip up to the top of Troutbeck Tongue and to walk off the ridge northwards to find a suitable pitch near the sheepfold. Unfortunately we were losing the light and Chris wanted to get settled for… Full Story »

Review - Hi Gear Pitch and Go SS pop-up tent - First thoughts
BG! &bull Jul 15, 2011
No, I've not gone mad, I don't intend to use this shelter for camping. I will, however, use it as a night-shelter for me, my low-chair and my photography kit while out snapping the night sky in winter. I'll probably use it as fishing shelter too, and possibly as a beach-tent. You could sleep in it -… Full Story »

Review - Lifeventure Downlight 900 sleeping bag - First proper use
BG! &bull Jul 14, 2011
I used the bag on the recent two-night wildcamping weekend in the Lakes District and I had two nights of comfortable sleep in it in an open-fly tent in temperatures that dipped to +5C. On the same outing my walking… Full Story »

The Keeltappers and Grunters Social Club 2011 Wildcamp Weekend - Part 3 - Sunday
BG! &bull Jul 14, 2011
Saturday night was dry but a little more chilly than Friday, with a cool breeze coming from over the tarn. I woke briefly at first light and saw some Red Deer on the slopes above us, but unlike back in… Full Story »

The Keeltappers and Grunters Social Club 2011 Wildcamp Weekend - Part 1 - Friday
BG! &bull Jul 12, 2011
I managed a reasonably early getaway on Friday but still arrived at the M6 in time to be caught up in a major snarl-up near J12. After being backed off the slip-road by the Feds I lost a lot of… Full Story »

Review - Lifeventure Downlight 900 sleeping bag - First thoughts
BG! &bull Jun 4, 2011
The sleeping bag being reviewed is the Lifeventure Downlight 900, the Go Outdoors link is here and the Lifeventure link is here. It's worth noting that the photo on the Go Outdoors page is currently incorrect - perhaps it is of a previous version? The photo on the Lifeventure page is correct. The first thing to report is what this item's like straight out of… Full Story »

Merrell Chameleon Wrap Slams & Salomon Exit Aeros - final reviews
BG! &bull May 31, 2011
The Merrell Chameleon Wrap Slams have done a fair few miles now, I've been wearing them either with very thin socks or with no socks at all because of the sizing problem. With socks they still squeak quite loudly so I tend to wear them only when I'm on solo walks, obviously when I'm going… Full Story »

A few days at Borrowdale - Part 3 - Long and gentle
BG! &bull Apr 27, 2011
Thursday morning and yet again some of us were up bright and early. Some of the others were reluctant to part company with their duvets, until they were informed of the possibility that they might miss breakfast. Fed and packed, we loaded the cars and drove indirectly (I made a few wrong turns) to the free-for-all that… Full Story »
