    History Ultralight backpacking was popularized by stone traveller Ray Jardine, whose 1992 book PCT Hiker's Handbook, after retitled as Beyond Backpacking in 1999, laid a foundations for most techniques which ultralight backpackers operate today. Jardine claimed his primary Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike was with a bottom enclosure weight of 25 pounds (11 kg), as good as by his third PCT thru-hike it was subsequent 9 pounds (4.1 kg).
