What is it Like to Live on a Boat
flakeys.webs.com via @BoatLiving &bull 2 Hours AgoWelcome to my boat blog! I've just started my blog so be sure and definitely keep coming back because I will be blogging about everything I do. We bought our boat on Oct. 10, 2009. We keep our boat at a high and dry marina. We spend the weekends, holidays, and our vacations on the boat. The marina has a dock that we plug into at night for electricity and water. The marina puts our boat in the water when we tell them we will be coming. When we leave, the marina puts the boat back in dry dock. Six… Full Story »

The bearable lightness: Kids on the mountain
thebearablelightness.blogspot.com via @nordiclightpack &bull YesterdayHaving three small boys, aged four months, three- and five years can make it difficult and challenging to get out into the wilderness for longer times. Most probably I will not be able to do any longer trips the next few years. Most parents just give up and wait for better times when the kids are older. This is a pity though, and I did not want to give up so easily. A short trip with two kids should be within reach. Preferably I would have liked to go with the entire family, but even an optimist like myself has… Full Story »

Things Fall Apart | The Path Less Pedaled
pathlesspedaled.com via @nicolesnell &bull Sep 2, 2010I walked into a small independent camera store today to see about getting my Nikon fixed. Things are falling apart. The rubber lens ring flops around like a hulahoop. The focus is erratic, sometimes tack sharp, sometimes focusing four inches in front of what I'm aiming at. The camera even shuts off now and again. I've managed to atleast "fix" the last problem with a little piece of folded paper that I stick in the battery compartment to maintain constant pressure on the electrical contacts. Early on in the trip I more or less destroyed a rear wheel. Only about… Full Story »

Wilderness Hunting - Colorado Division of Wildlife
wildlife.state.co.us via @MalcolmChilds &bull Aug 31, 2010There are a lot reason's people like to head outdoors every fall for elk hunting. For some people it's about reconnecting with nature, for others it's about spending time with friends and family, and for others it's about challenging yourself. In general, hunting is about getting away from the day-to-day norms of life and immersing yourself in the natural world. Backpack hunting is not only a great way to be successful this fall, but it's an amazing way to challenge yourself-surrounded with all the solitude the Rocky Mountains have to offer. I'm not going to sugar coat it for you-backpack… Full Story »

Dave Gibson: Return to the Moose River Plains
Adirondack Almanack &bull Aug 31, 2010
A summer day. The road to the Moose River Plains from Limekiln Lake is free of traffic this morning, the sun's rays have not yet turned the evening dew to dust. As I drive down the shaded road I think about the work of local people from Inlet who dug and placed sand on these roads to give the heavy logging trucks enough traction on the steep sections. Dick Payne, former Inlet Police Chief, left me memorable impressions of working the Plains in the "old days." Since 1964 when the Gould Paper Company sold this land to the people of… Full Story »

Lightweight Backpacking. An Economics Lesson. Go Backpacking Kits Light Weight Backpacking, Hiking, Guides and Advice
gobackpackingkits.com via @backpackingkits &bull Aug 30, 2010The one thing that I always get whenever I lightweight backpack is when people seriously look at my pack and say wonderful things out loud like "I could never backpack that light." If I wasn't used to it, I would feel like a real freak and have to seek therapy. You get the idea. Believe me I was stunned the first time I went out and I met people that were carrying half the weight I was. Yet, the lightweighters oddly seemed alright and without want. In fact they seemed happier and it didn't look like they were suffering.… Full Story »

Katherine with a K: NOLS Yukon- Part I- Week 1 of Backpacking
katherine-with-a-k.blogspot.com via @BackCountryEdge &bull Aug 29, 2010The morning after meeting our instructors, all 14 students headed to the NOLS warehouse. This was the official first day of the course. Before setting off, we had to pack our food rations and get our gear all setup. Though I'd never backpacked before, I knew that weight was obviously an issue and I'd have to forgo some of life's luxuries. Me and the word travelling light have never really been friends, but in the past few years, with so many trips under my belt, I thought I had a good handle on what "travelling light" meant.… Full Story »
